The word of the day around here has been..."beards...
Moses had one, Jesus had one, Sam has one (ok so we're kind of guessing on those first two) but we think they're pretty cool!
This morning a group of 15 kids both from Lawrence UMYF and Fort Collins UMYF got up at 4:30 AM to shop the infamous "Massachusetts Street Sidewalk Sale" to get the good deals. Unfortunately, most found it to not be worth the early morning (we were up before Starbucks was open!), but enjoyed the time walking in the bright and early heat together. :o)
Once 8:00 hit, the real work began! This was our last day of work so we tried really hard to accomplish all the tasks we set out to do. In Eudora, exterior house painting is finally complete and the kids are really glad to be out of small town Kansas. A different group took apart an old playground that was on the roof of the church and now this can be used as a different space. Other groups had the awesome experience of meeting people that needed help working in their homes. They were reminded how amazing it is to get to know someone--really get to know someone--and find out their story. Sometimes you even find out that they are fluent in Klingon!
Tonight we all went out to a restaurant for dinner (which did NOT include hot dogs) and had a great devotional and joys and concerns time. As the kids were talking about the hard work they completed and the friendships they have made here, I got to thinking about a conversation I had with my team today while working at a shelter for homeless families. We were frustrated about not having the right tools or sufficient tools to complete the projects we were working on. After being frustrated for a few minutes, I tried to help the kids realize that this is how the people we are helping feel most of the time. This week we all feel really accomplished with the tasks we've taken on and completed, but we also have given "tools" to the people we have met that will help them to do the every day tasks we take for granted. Even if these tasks are as small as organizing a cabinet, pulling a weed, or cooking a hot dog, we have helped to make these do-able.
Tomorrow we are off of the work site and on to have fun with our new Lawrence friends at the lake!
