Lawrence Mission Trip, Day 2: We're Melting!

Today was our first full day of work! After a well earned rest, we began our day by meeting our hosts, Tami Clark (Director of Youth Ministries and Volunteer Coordinator) and Allison Bond (Youth Ministry Intern) After this we began to divide into our work teams and head off to our various locations around the city.

Despite the usual awkward hesitations, our two groups have come together very quickly. The students from Lawrence have been extremely welcoming to our kids, and our kids have reciprocated this in such amazing ways! It's really so great to see how quickly we have all become friends...

All day our students battled the CRAZY heat (even the kids who live here in Lawrence were surprised by how hot it got today) and managed to get SO much work done. It's really impressive how hard everyone has been working to make sure they are pulling their weight and making a difference. Even the small jobs make a profound impact on the overall project, and our youth seem to have picked up on this instinctively.

The picture above was taken in Eudora, KS at the home of a woman named Viola. This group spent much of their time prepping Viola's house for painting and working to clean up her vast and beautiful property.

Other projects have included painting a classroom in FUMC, removing an old fence to prepare for building a new fence, and reinforcing/rebuilding a wheelchair ramp and prepping to stain it. Overall, it seems that we are off to a good start and ready for a LONG week of hard and fulfilling work. God is good!

In addition to the work they are already doing, tomorrow half our group will be serving breakfast to members of the homeless community here in Lawrence early in the morning (the other half will serve them dinner on Friday morning). Along with this, we will all be serving dinner for a cookout out on by the shelter across the street from FUMC Lawrence. What an amazing opportunity!

Well, that's all for now!

P.S. Check out the video below. Apparently David Dalke was pranked by Comedy Central. It's definitely inappropriate and it put David in an awkward situation, but he handles it like a champion. He had no idea this wasn't real until it aired on TV. This definitely gave us a bit of a laugh today. However, if you feel like writing an angry letter to comedy central, you have my full support.

P.P.S. Did I mention that it's REALLY hot out here?!
