Lawrence Mission Trip, Day 3: Helping The Homeless

Hey all,

You get to hear from guest blogger, Christine, tonight while Sam is more than willing to give up the blogisphere for a night and get some much needed sleep!

Today started early for some groups while they cooked and prepared breakfast for the church's organization called, Jubilee Cafe which serves breakfast to the homeless of Lawrence. The kids worked extra hard preparing biscuits and gravy and pancakes to serve. They estimated there were over 100 people served breakfast between 6:30 and 8:30 AM. Everyone was surprised at how many families and children were there to eat and lots of kids commented on the great conversations they had getting to know people.

The work groups are still working tremendously hard. We put Tami and Allison in a pickle trying to find more work for the teams that are barreling through projects faster than expected. Personally, we think it's a great pickle to be in! A chain link fence was completed today by Kyle's group; Sam's group is almost finished with a wheelchair ramp; rooms in the church are nearly completely painted; and another group created some much needed storage for a homeless hospitality network near the church. We have been part of some awesome projects here that are really helping out members of the Lawrence community!

We also had the opportunity tonight to host a cookout for a homeless resource near the church and the stories that came out of that experience will be ones that stay with these kids for the rest of their lives...and I think David will tell you all about them at church as well (which is why we all love him)! We cooked more hotdogs than any of us had probably ever seen, but were rewarded by realizing the joy and gratitude that something as small a 100%beef/chicken/turkey dog can bring. Without even a nudge, kids started mingling with others as if they had been volunteering with this shelter for years. I am extremely impressed by the amount of courage and motivation these kids have to meet people, find out their stories, and listen. That is really all it takes and there is no where better to learn that than a mission trip in the Kansas heat.

...speaking of which, there haven't been as many comments about heat today so either the Colorado kids are adapting quickly or they're just having too much fun to notice!

We had to say goodbye to David, Jill, and Will tonight as they set off early to head back to Colorado for bigger (but we won't say better) things. All the kids signed a poster for each of the three to remember the days they helped here. Prayers for safe travel for all of them.

Tomorrow we are set to find more projects to complete but everyone is still motivated even with a heat index of 101. Everyone is looking forward to an evening pool party with the entire Lawrence group who are just old friends by now. :o)

We're only half way through the week but we have lots of completed projects, great new friends, and 50 leftover hot dogs -- I think we're in business!
